GULLIVER MARKET OPERATES FOR 4YRS WITHOUT A TOILET

They say godliness is next to cleanliness but for residents and vendors of Gulliver market in area 49 Lilongwe this is to the contrary.
The market has been running and operating for close to 4yrs now without any building or shark to call a toilet posing a health threat for the people operating within the but also around the market. This however, lives unanswered questions as to where when these people (vendors) relieve themselves as the market turns to grow with each morning sun.

According to the chairperson for the market development committee one
Mr Manyenje, communication had been relayed to the Lilongwe City Assembly on the plight of the situation sometime back and yet up to date no remedy has been found to cure such a condition.” I contacted the city assembly officials on our plight and they promised to come and show me the place where the toilet was to be erected, we have waited for long and yet no official has pitched up to allocate the place. We are currently receiving complaints from the nearby homes and entertainment centres where some vendors frequent to seek refuge and yet there is nothing I can do to stop this” he was quoted
When an official from the city assembly was contacted on the situation, he declined to comment but assured us that he would get back after meeting the responsible officers.

The Lilongwe City Assembly had been collecting market fee for sometime but recently stopped without notifying the market development committee on their reasons for pulling out, this raises eyebrows as to what and how the Assembly used the collections for since no toilet was constructed, no proper running tap erected within the market complemented by late refuse collection.
The market encompasses close to eighty structures, running on different errands and merchandise.
With this population and the impending rains it is quite obvious that the situation is likely to get worse as most vendors have no where to relieve themselves but the nearby hide outs causing an  alarm on the spread of water borne diseases but also general cleanliness amongst the very many.
